Best Invoicing Software for Freelancers

I recently posted an article on FriendFeed which stirred up a conversation around invoicing software for entrepreneurs.  Several alternatives where thrown around, but the two main ones mentioned were the popular Freshbooks and Harvest.   Although they are very similar the general consensus was leaning toward Harvest as the winner. See the conversation below:

I’m a huge Freshbooks fans – easy to use, intuitive…and it’s been adding a number of new and useful features such as a general ledger. It’s been one of the key tools to run my consulting business.

I am finding being in Canada a little limiting with the current online invoicing choices.. I would really like to be able to import/export into my accounting pacakge, which is Simply Accounting by Sage. Talked to Freshbooks, but haven’t had much success. Given that Freshbooks is Canadian, I would have expected something more in support of Canadian accounting package integrations.

Clarityaccounting.com (which can be used in Canada, unlike quickbooksonline) does integrate with Freshbooks, but it’s not as feature rich, and doesn’t seem quite there yet. (my accountant wants something he can import into his accounting system, Clarity doesn’t cut it for that)

So for me.. I will still be generating my invoices from Simply Accounting that is running on windows virtual machine on my Mac.. very painful..

Bill, Freshbooks makes it looks like Clarity Accounting supports importing from Freshbooks, check out: http://community.freshbooks.com/addons/view/clarity_accounting/

This is awesome, Mitchell. Thanks for digging up some answers folks had : )

Just wanted to point out — ’cause Jesse was asking about an iPhone app — time tracking is, in fact, one of FreshBooks’ features and we have a bunch of ways to make that quick and easy such as an iPhone app called MiniBooks. It lets you send invoices on the go, too! You can find out more about here: http://community.freshbooks.com/addons/view/minibooks.

We have a Mac OSX widget and some other time tracking add-ons as well: http://community.freshbooks.com/addons/#16.

And Bill, if you see this, I’d love to hear more about how FreshBooks could work better for your business. We do support a Simply Accounting Import and Export function for clients, but I can see how a more robust integration would make you and your accountant happier ; )

Just an update on my earlier post..

Looking at Xero.com for my accounting, looks very robust and looks like it can support Canada! No data export, other than a few reports to xls, etc.

They just launched a Freshbooks integration, create an invoice in Freshbooks and it ends up in Xero.com. (same thing for clients, paid invoices, and I think expenses but not 100% sure). This is the kind of integration I was looking for with Simply Accouting. The ability to invoice in Freshbooks but export it all into Simply instead of having to manual invoices or journal entries..

If you're looking for a great combination of invoicing and time tracking you might want to look at TSheets, http://www.tsheets.com. It has an integration with FreshBooks and the combination of the two is truly amazing. One is awesome at time tracking the other is awesome at invoicing and it is all in one stop! It has really saved my business time and money.
