Wow, great video from the Given Tree facebook wall. Speaker makes some great points, I always assumed minimizing overhead was critical for charities to build donor trust, but maybe not, if that overhead is for fundraising/marketing the end result can be significantly more beneficial to reaching their goal.

Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). In this bold talk, he says: Let's change the way we think about changing the world.

Adam Garone gives a talk on how the charity Movember, in support of raising awareness and donations for research to fight prostate cancer, came to be.

Adam Garone has an impressive moustache, and it's for a good cause. A co-founder of Movember, Garone's initiative to raise awareness for men's health -- by having men grow out their moustaches every November -- began as a dare in a bar in 2003. Now, it's a worldwide movement that raised $126 million for prostate cancer research last year.

Five year Mo Bro Ron Telpner shares his inspirational story of living with prostate cancer, conducting two years of active surveillance and ultimately making the decision for a radical prostatectomy. He generously allowed Movember cameras to capture the days leading up to and immediately following his surgery. Knowledge is power, health is for life.

What few charities focus on sadly is sustainability in their charity projects. Sure it's great to donate food and supplies, but what about next week for these people? next month?

Charity: water is making it a priority to keep clean water flowing over time. Up to 30% of the cost of a charity: water project goes into training and educating the community about how to take care of the well after their gone.

We're working with our partners to tackle the issue of sustainability, educate communities, and fund mechanics programs to repair broken water projects.

In July 2010, Shakil Khan visited a village called Seglemen in Tigray, Ethiopia. About 4,000 people live here and collect their drinking water from a muddy creek. Thanks to everyone who donated to Shak's mycharity:water birthday campaign in June 2010, this area will soon have clean, safe drinking water.

Charity:Water is in the field, checking up on freshwater projects in Kenya. Here at Kampi Ya Moto, we met Rose, who collects water from a charity: water kiosk each day for her family of seven. Instead of spending two hours walking to collect water, Rose now spends that time studying. She's earning her Master's degree in counseling.

Why goats? The reason is that goats work. Goats breed and multiply and help the villagers pay for medicine and other important things in times of emergency. They are a valuable source of financial independence for these people, who are very poor and often get taken advantage of by money lenders.
