THIS IS WATER - By David Foster Wallace http://mitchmckenna.com/post/12833/this-is-water-by-david-foster-wallace

The Glossary put together a great video based on David Foster Wallace's 2005 commencement speech with insights into life, education and perspective.

In 2005, author David Foster Wallace was asked to give the commencement address to the 2005 graduating class of Kenyon College. However, the resulting speech didn't become widely known until 3 years later, after his tragic death. It is, without a doubt, some of the best life advice we've ever come across, and perhaps the most simple and elegant explanation of the real value of education. We made this video, built around an abridged version of the original audio recording, with the hopes that the core message of the speech could reach a wider audience who might not have otherwise been interested.

Rita Pierson: Every kid needs a champion http://mitchmckenna.com/post/12819/rita-pierson-every-kid-needs-a-champion

Rita Pierson, a teacher for 40 years, once heard a colleague say, "They don't pay me to like the kids." Her response: "Kids don't learn from people they don't like.'" A rousing call to educators to believe in their students and actually connect with them on a real, human, personal level.

What is in Bread? Is it healthy for us? http://mitchmckenna.com/post/12101/white-bread-death-epipheotv

This is the 2nd video I've seen from the guys over at epipheo.tv, I'm really likely their online video series answering random questions we often ask ourselves (or should be!).

We often think that bread is healthier for us than sugar, but we talked with J. Stanton about the real truth behind white bread and candy.

Marco Tempest: A cyber-magic card trick like no other http://mitchmckenna.com/post/12000/marco-tempest-a-cyber-magic-card-trick-like-no-other

The suits, numbers and colors in a deck of cards correspond to the seasons, moon cycles and calendar. Marco Tempest straps on augmented reality goggles and does a card trick like you've never seen before, weaving a lyrical tale as he deals. (This version fixes a glitch in the original performance, but is otherwise exactly as seen live by the TEDGlobal audience, including the dazzling augmented reality effects.)

Shimon Schocken: The self-organizing computer course http://mitchmckenna.com/post/11891/shimon-schocken-the-self-organizing-computer-course

Shimon Schocken and Noam Nisan developed a curriculum for their students to build a computer, piece by piece. When they put the course online -- giving away the tools, simulators, chip specifications and other building blocks -- they were surprised that thousands jumped at the opportunity to learn, working independently as well as organizing their own classes in the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). A call to forget about grades and tap into the self-motivation to learn.

Brain

The brains consist of three parts. The forebrain, which controls all thoughts, senses, motor functions, emotions and hunger. The midbrain controls auditory and visual reflexes as well as awareness. The hindbrain controls coordination and analysis of senses.

Brains have a similar texture to tofu.

There are 100,000 miles of blood vessels within the brain. Enough to circle earth four times.

The ancient Egyptians believed the brainapos;s function was to produce snot.

Though the brain only makes up 2% of the bodyapos;s weight, it uses 20% of the bodyapos;s energy.

A person?s brain has 100 billion neurons. These cells are known as the gray matter which process information.

Einstein?s brains have been preserved for study. It is split in to 240 separate slides for viewing.

89.06 is the percentage of people who report normally writing with their right hand, 10.6% with their left and 0.34% with either hand.

More electrical impulses are generated in one day by a single human brain than by all the telephones in the world.

After age 30, the brain shrinks a quarter of a percent (0.25%) in mass each year.

Men process information primarily from the left side of the brain. Women tend to use both sides at the same times.

The brain can stay alive for 4 to 6 minutes without oxygen. After that cells begin die.

The myth that people use only 10% of their brain is a myth. Humans use 100% of their brains.

The composition of the brain = 77-78% water, 10-12% lipids, 8% protein, 1% carbs, 2% soluble organics, 1% inorganic salt.

It is currently impossible to measure the possible ?storage? potential of a brain. A professor at Northwestern University suggests that if a human brain was converted in to a hard drive like device, it could store 2.5 petabytes of data. That equals more than 500 000 DVD?s or 100 000 Blu Ray discs.

Salman Khan: Let's Use Video to Reinvent Education http://mitchmckenna.com/post/9266/salman-khan-lets-use-video-to-reinvent-education

Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script -- give students video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher available to help.
