Some very cool features from Google I/O'19 for the future of the web:

  • Lazy loading images for a faster web / mobile web
  • "Paint Holding" to stop the flash between pages if they're fast enough.
  • Portals for seamless transition/animation between different domains or just the same domain.
  • "Web Packaging" so you don't necessarily have to go back to the server.
  • "performance budgets" for assets as part of CI
  • Installing PWA apps on desktop

Bootstrap Material http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14791/bootstrap-material

This Bootstrap theme is an easy way to use the new Material Design guidelines by Google in your Bootstrap 3 based application. Just include the theme right after the Bootstrap CSS and include the javascript at the end of your document, everything will be converted to Material Design (paper) style.

I'm Feeling Lucky in Omnibox http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14581/im-feeling-lucky-in-omnibox

Sometimes I know the first result of google search will probably get me what I want, so I was wondering if there was a way to use "I'm Feeling Lucky" in chrome's url address bar, turns our you kind of can:

  1. Under Options / Basics / Default search, click the Manage button to bring up Search Engines window.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Set Name to "I'm Feeling Lucky"
  4. Set Keyword to something short and simple to remember.  (I like 1-character keywords, so I just use "L".)
  5. Set URL to the following: http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUS264&q=%s&btnI=I'm+Feeling+Lucky
  6. Click OK.

INSTAGRAM with Material Design http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14572/instagram-with-material-design

Here my concept of how instagram would look with material design. Material design is the next step in Google's design evolution for Android. Also, some animations transitions may be too much but it just there to showcase what can be and to showcase separation of elements.

Google Glass - How It Feels http://mitchmckenna.com/post/12532/how-it-feels-through-glass

Google released a new video of Google Glass, which shows off some of the key features they plan to have on it when it launches. It says that "All video footage captured through Glass.", but it's unclear how much of Glass itself is just CGI. Watch Project Glass - One Day if you haven't already.

Want to see how Glass actually feels? It's surprisingly simple. Say "take a picture" to take a picture. Record what you see, hands free. Even share what you see, live. Directions are right in front of you. Speak to send a message, or translate your voice. Get the notifications that matter most. Ask whatever's on your mind and get answers without having to ask. Paul Irish - Better Web App Development Through Tooling http://mitchmckenna.com/post/11511/google-io-2012-better-web-app-development-through-tooling

Another great presentation from Paul Irish, he's one of the best developer speakers I've seen. He demos some awesome new tools for the modern web developer, and a new project called Yeoman.

Building a solid webapp is a challenge for all developers, but a plethora of tools have emerged recently to assist you. From starting boilerplates, to performance tuning and build tools, you'll get a full overview of the tooling ecosystem. In this session, you'll learn which mature and valuable open source projects can save you time as well as get answers to common questions in building a webapp.

Also, if you haven't already watch Paul's 12 Tricks to Develop Quicker or any of his other great talks on his Youtube Channel.

Google Project Glass - Concept Video http://mitchmckenna.com/post/10990/project-glass-one-day

Google gives a sneak peak at its Project Glass plans; glasses which present visual information in front of your eyes, such as the temperature outside, time, and even messages from friends. The video shows how they envision we'll do many of the tasks we currently do on our phone, in the future. The hope is that by having this information projected where we'd be looking anyway, we won't have to be looking down at our phones all the time and missing out on experiences.

There's even some things in the video I wish our phones currently did, like auto-detecting when your at one of your favorite locations and prompting you if you'd like to check-in. That said, there's lots in the video that we haven't quite gotten right yet, even with the likes of Siri, that could obviously be magnified be having it into our line of sight such as annoying notifications and bad voice-to-text. I digress though, in the video demonstration, it looks pretty damn cool.
