Two days ago Canada legalized marijuana, and impressively timed, that same morning, Classified released the video for his latest single, Legal Marijuana. The video’s a play on the classic Coca-Cola “Hilltop” commercial from 1971. Some people might not like the skewed voice on the chorus but I think it’s catchy. Nova Scotia alone, where Class lives, did $660,000 in marijuana sales that first day.If the title of the album seems familiar, it’s because in June Classified released an EP titled “Tomorrow Could Be…”, so this full length album is those 6 tracks plus 7 new ones. Super Nova Scotian is the hidden gem near the end of the album; it features Bubbles! The duo of last year’s beer pong anthem Pong Dance is back! This time Vigiland is taking over the repeat button on your Friday nights. In Febuary, we posted Heavy ft. Kiiara; Linkin Park’s first single off their upcoming album One More Light. After that, Battle Symphony dropped in March. Now LP’s shaking things up again; enlisting Pusha T and Stomrzy for a new rock/rap collaboration that’s sure to please those old Fort Minor fans out there. No stranger to cross-genre creation, Guetta has a new collaboration with Nick Minaj and brought in Lil Wayne as well to make it a Young Money duo. For both Guetta and Minaj being in two different genres of music, it’s kind of surprising that this is the fourth single they’ve released together. Previous singles being Where Them Girls At (2007), Turn Me On (2012), and Hey Mama (2015). This track will almost certainly lead to another Hot 100 entry for Guetta and Minaj. Minaj’s verses definitely remind me of her “Beez in the Trap” style rapping.  Zara Larsson has another #1 single on her hands. Building off the success of her single last year, Never Forget You in collaboration with MNEK, earlier this year Tinie Tempah released one of my favorite tracks of 2016: Girls Like featuring Zara on vocals (mega post there on Tinie Tempah if you need a catchup). Then in June, Larsson was featured in the official song of UEFA Euro 2016, David Guetta’s This One’s for You. “Ain’t My Fault” is the first single off her upcoming 2nd studio album, name and release date TBD. Kygo is back with another hit. Earlier this year he had some chart-topping success with Raging ft. Kodaline as an irish rock band meets dance club sound. You might recognize Kygo from several of his 2015 killer-year hits Stole The Show feat. Parson James, Here for You ft. Ella Henderson (my personal fav), or Firestone ft. Conrad Sewell.

Tove Lo said the music video was inspired by the “cool girl” monologue from the movie “Gone Girl”. Her next album “Lady Wood” comes out October 28th. Besides “Cool Girl” no other tracks from the new album had been released until this morning, Tove Lo released “Influence (feat. Wiz Khalifa)”. I first heard this song a couple months ago while Pat was in town on the speakers in a clothing store and shouted across the store for him to Shazam it. I keep coming back to it so I figured I’d share. It was “Part of Me” by Phases, is an indie pop band from LA. When I checked out their Youtube channel, I discovered they gained some popularity with their debut music video last year; I’m In Love With My Life, but not too much since then. Like Part of Me, a lot of their beats have an almost circa-michael-jackson sound, eg. see Cooler, and Betty Blue. DJ Earworm (Jordan Roseman) is back with his yearly United State of Pop mashup to wrap up the year. This year he managed to mashup the top 50 songs into a single track (previously it was only the top 25). Personally, we think this year's version isn't quite as good as last year's United State of Pop 2014, you'll notice it's a little slower pace. "Music has been going through a softer phase than it was a few years ago so there's that return of adult contemporary" said DJ Earworm. Still, it's always amazing he's able to merge that many hits into one; you can get a copy of the track to download free here.

Classified manages to score a new single with Snoop Dogg for his upcoming album “Greatful“, out January 15. Don’t get me wrong, Classified’s had hits with big names before, B.o.B, Royce da 5’9” and Joe Budden to name a few, but I think it’s safe to say Snoop’s the biggest name yet. I’ll be honest, I like Filthy, the previously released single for the album better, but Class is trying to target a wider audience with this one, not just hiphop fans. Toronto recording artist The Weeknd has been on fire lately, holding down the #1 spot on BillBoard Top 100 with his The Hills single. We thought Drake’s new video for Hotline Bling would be enough to dethrone The Weeknd from the top of the charts but now The Weeknd has managed to score remix collaborations with not just Nicki Minaj, but even more impressively, Eminem. He also released a neat 360 video for it, but only includes the first 2 minutes of the song.

When I started this post it was to share Quake Matthews‘ Find A Way single but evolved into a full album review when I realized his whole 2015 album Rap Music was available to stream on SoundCloud. I discovered the album features a ridiculous amount of Halifax talent. Felix Jaehn has found his 2nd major hit in Ain’t Nobody featuring Jasmine Thompson. His first hit was last year when he released OMI – Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix).  There’s a couple remixes taking off Ain’t Nobody too The Rooftop Boys Remix and the Gunes Ergun Remix. The Rooftop Boys remix being the more popular of the two, which isn’t really a surprise seeing as they’ve done successful remixes for Kanye West, Nick Jonas and Coldplay, but if I’m honest I like the Gunes Ergun remix better.  Ain’t Nobody is actually a remake of the the 1983 classic Aint Nobody by Chaka Khan, it’s actually kind of interesting to hear the difference from Felix Jaehn’s version. Download: iTunes | Amazon | Google Play

Colson Baker aka Machine Gun Kelly recently released A Little More featuring Victoria Monet as the first single off his upcoming, yet-untitled sophomore album. Machine Gun Kelly is a white rapper who signed to Interscope/Bad Boy Records in 2011. You can actually watch Baker, producer Tommy Brown, and vocalist Victoria Monet work on the song in this short behind the scenes video. Leading up to this MGK also released his 2015 singles Till I Die and Against The World. This is not the Mumford & Sons you’ve heard before. In their new single Believe they depart from their signature folk rock sounds, trading in their acoustic instruments for electric. Not only that, but the song’s written by band members Dwane, Lovett and Marshall instead of the band’s usual songwriter; Mumford. The song serves as the lead single for the band’s upcoming third studio album, Wilder Mind, to be released next month on May 4, 2015. East Coast Canada’s indie rock pride Joel Plaskett has released his fourth solo album. Plaskett’s an artist we’ve had the pleasure of seeing perform live on several occasions while back home in Halifax and PEI. The title of the album comes from Plaskett’s old neighbour Roy, who called the metal guardrail at the corner of Park Avenue and King Street in Darmouth NS, the “Park Avenue sobriety test” because of how many impaired drivers got caught running into it.The first song off the album we’ve got for you is my personal favorite and the latest single called Credits Roll. You can actually get a free download of Credits Roll on joelplaskett.com if you fill out his fan questionnaire.   The second song we wanna feature is the first song that Joel released for the album, and the title track of the album. You can just tell the song is perfect for singing along to at a live concert and Plaskett’s actually been performing it for years. In a well-shot video by Eli Leavitt you can see him performing The Park Avenue Sobriety Test live in Hamilton ON in 2013.  And as bonus, just a month ago Plaskett released On a Dime, my 3rd favorite track off the album. J.P. Cormier contributes some East Coast fiddle to it’s pub-folk-rock sound.  Others tracks off the album worth checking out is Alright OK (in particular will make longtime fans feel at home), Broken Heart Songs (with a little bit of a country sound while poking fun at country), and Song for Jersey (which you can watch a live performance of Song for Jersey posted by Exclaim!
