I’ll ask myself questions like this but how awesome is it someone actually puts in the work and visually answers something like this?

Wren uses visual effects to show you how much water is actually on Planet Earth!

Randall Munroe: Comics that ask "what if?" http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14416/randall-munroe-comics-that-ask-what-if

xkcd!

Web cartoonist Randall Munroe answers simple what-if questions ("what if you hit a baseball moving at the speed of light?") using math, physics, logic and deadpan humor. In this charming talk, a reader's question about Google's data warehouse leads Munroe down a circuitous path to a hilariously over-detailed answer — in which, shhh, you might actually learn something.

Pour a glass of water and watch it turn to ice instantly! This step-by-step tutorial will show you everything you need to know about Instant Ice.

To get this effect, I put multiple unopened bottles of PUREFLO bottled water in the freezer for 2 hours and 45 minutes exactly. The purified water gets supercooled, and when it touches an ice crystal, it turns instantly to ice. It will also do this if the bottle is hit hard enough. This was a really fun project, and one of my favorites because it's safe, awe inspiring, and anyone can do it.

Jane McGonigal: The game that can give you 10 extra years of life http://mitchmckenna.com/post/11595/jane-mcgonigal-the-game-that-can-give-you-10-extra-years-of-life

I thought McGonigal was such a great speaker, I looked up her old TED Talk; another great talk: Gaming can make a better world.

When game designer Jane McGonigal found herself bedridden and suicidal following a severe concussion, she had a fascinating idea for how to get better. She dove into the scientific research and created the healing game, SuperBetter. In this moving talk, McGonigal explains how a game can boost resilience -- and promises to add 7.5 minutes to your life.

Brain

The brains consist of three parts. The forebrain, which controls all thoughts, senses, motor functions, emotions and hunger. The midbrain controls auditory and visual reflexes as well as awareness. The hindbrain controls coordination and analysis of senses.

Brains have a similar texture to tofu.

There are 100,000 miles of blood vessels within the brain. Enough to circle earth four times.

The ancient Egyptians believed the brainapos;s function was to produce snot.

Though the brain only makes up 2% of the bodyapos;s weight, it uses 20% of the bodyapos;s energy.

A person?s brain has 100 billion neurons. These cells are known as the gray matter which process information.

Einstein?s brains have been preserved for study. It is split in to 240 separate slides for viewing.

89.06 is the percentage of people who report normally writing with their right hand, 10.6% with their left and 0.34% with either hand.

More electrical impulses are generated in one day by a single human brain than by all the telephones in the world.

After age 30, the brain shrinks a quarter of a percent (0.25%) in mass each year.

Men process information primarily from the left side of the brain. Women tend to use both sides at the same times.

The brain can stay alive for 4 to 6 minutes without oxygen. After that cells begin die.

The myth that people use only 10% of their brain is a myth. Humans use 100% of their brains.

The composition of the brain = 77-78% water, 10-12% lipids, 8% protein, 1% carbs, 2% soluble organics, 1% inorganic salt.

It is currently impossible to measure the possible ?storage? potential of a brain. A professor at Northwestern University suggests that if a human brain was converted in to a hard drive like device, it could store 2.5 petabytes of data. That equals more than 500 000 DVD?s or 100 000 Blu Ray discs.

Anders Ynnerman: Visualizing the medical data explosion http://mitchmckenna.com/post/8972/anders-ynnerman-visualizing-the-medical-data-explosion

Today medical scans produce thousands of images and terabytes of data for a single patient in mere seconds, but how do doctors parse this information and determine what's useful? At TEDxGöteborg, scientific visualization expert Anders Ynnerman shows us sophisticated new tools -- like virtual autopsies -- for analyzing this myriad data, and a glimpse at some sci-fi-sounding medical technologies in development. This talk contains some graphic medical imagery.
