Ubuntu Phone Walkthrough http://mitchmckenna.com/post/15158/ubuntu-phone-walkthrough-video

I kind of like how they kept the Ubuntu feel, and how someone has finally done a different app launcher than the home-screen grid of icons.

Ubuntu’s scopes give you related content on one screen, instead of hiding it behind different apps. So everything you look for in life is now right at your fingertips.

We present a method for converting first-person videos, for example, captured with a helmet camera during activities such as rock climbing or bicycling, into hyperlapse videos: time-lapse videos with a smoothly moving camera.

Hugh Herr: The new bionics that let us run, climb and dance http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14269/hugh-herr-the-new-bionics-that-let-us-run-climb-and-dance

Hugh Herr is building the next generation of bionic limbs, robotic prosthetics inspired by nature's own designs. Herr lost both legs in a climbing accident 30 years ago; now, as the head of the MIT Media Lab's Biomechatronics group, he shows his incredible technology in a talk that's both technical and deeply personal — with the help of ballroom dancer Adrianne Haslet-Davis, who lost her left leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, and performs again for the first time on the TED stage.

Edward Snowden: Here's how we take back the Internet http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14208/edward-snowden-heres-how-we-take-back-the-internet

Appearing by telepresence robot, Edward Snowden speaks at TED2014 about surveillance and Internet freedom. The right to data privacy, he suggests, is not a partisan issue, but requires a fundamental rethink of the role of the internet in our lives — and the laws that protect it. "Your rights matter," he say, "because you never know when you're going to need them." Chris Anderson interviews, with special guest Tim Berners-Lee.

Rupal Patel: Synthetic voices, as unique as fingerprints http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14056/rupal-patel-synthetic-voices-as-unique-as-fingerprints

Many of those with severe speech disorders use a computerized device to communicate. Yet they choose between only a few voice options. That's why Stephen Hawking has an American accent, and why many people end up with the same voice, often to incongruous effect. Speech scientist Rupal Patel wanted to do something about this, and in this wonderful talk she shares her work to engineer unique voices for the voiceless.

Best of CES 2014: Oculus Rift 'Crystal Cove' Prototype | Engadget http://mitchmckenna.com/post/13907/best-of-ces-2014-oculus-rift-crystal-cove-prototype-engadget

The newest version of the Oculus Rift headset is another major step toward the retail version promised for some point in 2014. It takes the existing HD headset we saw at E3 2013 and swaps an LED screen for OLED. It adds an external camera, and positional markers on the headset, to track your position depth-wise. Perhaps most importantly, it kills motion blur -- one of the biggest issues with previous versions of Oculus VR's incredible Rift headset.
