I think the majority of people who use the web every day don't know how a website hosted on a server that would be as far away as on the other side of the world physically gets transported to their computer. and even if you do you'll probably still learn something from this TED Talk.

When a squirrel chewed through a cable and knocked him offline, journalist Andrew Blum started wondering what the Internet was really made of. So he set out to go see it -- the underwater cables, secret switches and other physical bits that make up the net.

Jane McGonigal: The game that can give you 10 extra years of life http://mitchmckenna.com/post/11595/jane-mcgonigal-the-game-that-can-give-you-10-extra-years-of-life

I thought McGonigal was such a great speaker, I looked up her old TED Talk; another great talk: Gaming can make a better world.

When game designer Jane McGonigal found herself bedridden and suicidal following a severe concussion, she had a fascinating idea for how to get better. She dove into the scientific research and created the healing game, SuperBetter. In this moving talk, McGonigal explains how a game can boost resilience -- and promises to add 7.5 minutes to your life.

Throughout human evolution, multiple versions of humans co-existed. Could we be mid-upgrade now? At TEDxSummit, Juan Enriquez sweeps across time and space to bring us to the present moment -- and shows how technology is revealing evidence that suggests rapid evolution may be under way.

Michael Norton: How to buy happiness http://mitchmckenna.com/post/11130/michael-norton-how-to-buy-happiness

The Power of Introverts - Susan Cain http://mitchmckenna.com/post/10913/susan-cain-the-power-of-introverts

In a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else, it can be difficult, even shameful, to be an introvert. But, as Susan Cain argues in this passionate talk, introverts bring extraordinary talents and abilities to the world, and should be encouraged and celebrated.

Susan Cain is a former corporate lawyer and negotiations consultant -- and a self-described introvert. At least one-third of the people we know are introverts, notes Cain in her new book Quiet. Although our culture undervalues them dramatically, introverts have made some of the great contributions to society – from Chopin's nocturnes to the invention of the personal computer to Gandhi’s transformative leadership. Cain argues that we design our schools, workplaces, and religious institutions for extroverts, and that this bias creates a waste of talent, energy, and happiness. Susan Cain is on a mission, and that mission is to speak for those who would rather not take the spotlight themselves: introverts.

Chris Bliss: Comedy is translation http://mitchmckenna.com/post/10860/chris-bliss-comedy-is-translation

It's one of reason's I think Jon Stewart is one of the smartest late night talk show comedian's of our generation - most of his material is educational, but the user doesn't even realize they are being educated because he's so funny.

Every act of communication is, in some way, an act of translation. Onstage at TEDxRainier, writer Chris Bliss thinks hard about the way that great comedy can translate deep truths for a mass audience. Chris Bliss explores the inherent challenge of communication, and how comedy opens paths to new perspectives.

Shawn Achor: The Happy Secret to Better Work http://mitchmckenna.com/post/10772/shawn-achor-the-happy-secret-to-better-work

It's surprisingly been a while since I've come across an inspirational TEDTalk video, but Shawn Achor had made thinking and literally laughing out loud. Great video.

We believe that we should work to be happy, but could that be backwards? In this fast-moving and entertaining talk from TEDxBloomington, psychologist Shawn Achor argues that actually happiness inspires productivity.

Sarah Kay: If I Should Have a Daughter ... http://mitchmckenna.com/post/9299/sarah-kay-if-i-should-have-a-daughter

This girl is one hell of an inspirational speaker. Her way with words and charisma will keep your attention for all 20 minutes of her TED Talk. “If I should have a daughter, instead of Mom, she's gonna call me Point B” began spoken word poet Sarah Kay, in a talk that inspired two standing ovations at TED2011. She tells the story of her metamorphosis from a wide-eyed teenager soaking in verse at New York's Bowery Poetry Club to a teacher connecting kids with the power of self-expression through Project V.O.I.C.E. -- and gives two breathtaking performances of “B” and “Hiroshima.”

Salman Khan: Let's Use Video to Reinvent Education http://mitchmckenna.com/post/9266/salman-khan-lets-use-video-to-reinvent-education

Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script -- give students video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher available to help.

Deb Roy: The Birth of a Word http://mitchmckenna.com/post/9264/deb-roy-the-birth-of-a-word

MIT researcher Deb Roy wanted to understand how his infant son learned language -- so he wired up his house with videocameras to catch every moment (with exceptions) of his son's life, then parsed 90,000 hours of home video (200 terabytes of data!) to watch "gaaaa" slowly turn into "water." Astonishing, data-rich research with deep implications for how we learn.

This is one of the more interesting and visually appealing talks on TED and I was blown away with the videos and images presented. The research combines communication, child psychology, visual imaging, and complex networks. One aspect of their research that I personally found interesting focuses on the feedback loops between and around mass media and social media.

Anders Ynnerman: Visualizing the medical data explosion http://mitchmckenna.com/post/8972/anders-ynnerman-visualizing-the-medical-data-explosion

Today medical scans produce thousands of images and terabytes of data for a single patient in mere seconds, but how do doctors parse this information and determine what's useful? At TEDxGöteborg, scientific visualization expert Anders Ynnerman shows us sophisticated new tools -- like virtual autopsies -- for analyzing this myriad data, and a glimpse at some sci-fi-sounding medical technologies in development. This talk contains some graphic medical imagery.

Kevin Stone: The bio-future of joint replacement http://mitchmckenna.com/post/7929/kevin-stone-the-bio-future-of-joint-replacement

Arthritis and injury grind down millions of joints, but few get the best remedy - real biological tissue. Kevin Stone shows a treatment that could sidestep the high costs and donor shortfall of human-to-human transplants with a novel use of animal tissue.

The use of animal tissue will stir up controversy. Compare this to eating meat almost daily though. It seems more humane to use a small amount of animal tissue for fixing ourselves only a few times in our entire lives. We kill/harvest so many animals already, they could use the parts from those animals more wisely.
