Mozilla Tilt: A New Way of Visualizing the DOM http://mitchmckenna.com/post/9881/tilt-hacksmozillaorg-demo

Tilt represents a new way of visualizing a web page. I can it being a great tool for new developers to understand the DOM and the box model in particular. This tool creates a 3D representation of the document, with the purpose of displaying, understanding and easily analyzing the DOM. It is a firefox extension using a WebGL implementation to provide a rich user-experience, fun interaction and useful information, while taking full advantage of 3D hardware acceleration.

The implementation consists of a Firefox extension containing a 3D representation of a web page, as both a fun visualization tool and a developer-friendly environment for debugging the document's structure, contents and nesting of the DOM tree. Various information besides the actual contents will be displayed on request, regarding each node's type, class, id, and other attributes if available.

Anders Ynnerman: Visualizing the medical data explosion http://mitchmckenna.com/post/8972/anders-ynnerman-visualizing-the-medical-data-explosion

Today medical scans produce thousands of images and terabytes of data for a single patient in mere seconds, but how do doctors parse this information and determine what's useful? At TEDxGöteborg, scientific visualization expert Anders Ynnerman shows us sophisticated new tools -- like virtual autopsies -- for analyzing this myriad data, and a glimpse at some sci-fi-sounding medical technologies in development. This talk contains some graphic medical imagery.

Browser Usage Data Visualized [Infographic] http://mitchmckenna.com/post/6035/browser-usage-data-visualized-infographic

Built using Axiis (open source data visualization framework) this visualization shows the historical browser breakdown of visitors to W3schools.com. It has the ability to filter by browser type. Each of the concentric rings are essentially pie charts showing the percentage of visitors using each browser for a particular time slice, starting with January 2002 in the center and working out to August 2009.

OSM 2008: A Year of Edits http://mitchmckenna.com/post/5580/osm-2008-a-year-of-edits

An animation showing edits to the OpenStreetMap.org project during 2008. OpenStreetMap is a wiki-style map of the world and this animation displays a white flash each time a way is entered or updated. Some edits are a result of a physical local survey by a contributor with a GPS unit and taking notes, other edits are done remotely using aerial photography or out-of-copyright maps, and some are bulk imports of official data.

OpenStreetMap started in 2004 and the rate of contributions is accelerating with four times as many people contributing to the project in 2008 compared to 2007. During the year, edits were made by some 20,000 individuals and there were bulk imports of data for many places, including the USA, India, Italy and Belarus which are clearly visible in the animation. (wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Potential_Datasources)

This animation was produced by itoworld.com. It is licensed CC-BY-SA and can also be downloaded if you are logged-in. Various stills are available from flickr.com/groups/itomedia/pool/. The music is 'Open Electro' by Vincent Girès' jamendo.com/en/artist/silence and can be downloaded from archive.org/details/silence-silence.

Jonathan Harris: The Web's secret stories

http://www.ted.com Jonathan Harris wants to make sense of the infinite world on the Web -- so he builds dazzling graphic interfaces that help us visualize the data floating around out there. Here he presents "We Feel Fine," a project that scours blogs to collect the planet's emoti(c)ons, and the "Yahoo! Time Capsule," which preserves images, quotes and thoughts snapped up in 2006. And he premieres "Universe," which presents current events as constellations of words -- a tag cloud of our collective consciousness. From: TEDtalksDirector Views: 38417
