General concept is a more "immersive experience", trying to mimic IMAX benefits, having the screen almost wrapping around you. Only really a benefit to bigger screens (eg. 55"+) and only if you sitting in the right spot (basically directly in front). Atleast that's what I read during last year's CES, unless much has changed since then(?).

Forbes had 6 pro's and 6 cons to them: http://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2014/08/13/curved-tvs-6-reasons-you-should-buy-one-and-6-more-why-you-shouldnt/
Ars Technica had a long piece trying to evaluating the "science" of them: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/01/whats-the-deal-with-curved-tvs/

Replied to: What services do you happily pay for? http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14947/replied-to-what-services-do-you-happily-pay-for

Internet Services I pay for:
It takes a lot to get me to pay for an internet service, basically it takes there being no way around getting the content without it. I looked at others answers and (since domain/hosting is excluded) the only ones I could come up with was:

Playstation Plus $50/year
Hockey Streaming (not GameCenter, like TgD, lol): $110/year
------------------------
Total: $160/year

Ones I’ve Paid For In The Past:
Xbox Live
OkCupid

My Justification For Not Paying For Some:
Netflix - I’m using my friends (after using it for a while though, it’s something I’d def pay for if I lost access)
Amazon Prime - I’ve never had a hard time getting to $30 to get the free shipping, and I can wait the 5-7 business days.
Feedly Pro - I love RSS and I love the Feedly mobile app, but there just isn’t a Pro feature that’s pushed me over the edge to pay for it yet (though the speed boost is tempting).
Dropbox Pro - I’ve gotten enough referral/bonus I don’t need it.

I was excited about this at first, until I realized this is something an app developer needs to add to their app, not just an update to the 1Password app. Maybe i'm misunderstanding this, but it seems like if I'm an app developer and my users want to use 1Password or Lastpass, or another password manager, I'll have to implement something different for all of them?

How is this not like "the developer indicates these are login form fields, password app developers indicate their app can fill in login forms, then when a app user clicks on one of these login form fields they have an option to open a menu to choose which app you want to fill the form in from"?

Replied to: Gadget unicorn sightings http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14555/replied-to-gadget-unicorn-sightings

Being from Canada I feel like I saw a lot of BlackBerry's no one in the US even got to see. My sister managed to convince her work at the time to get her the BlackBerry Storm (http://www.engadget.com/products/blackberry/storm/9530/), BlackBerry's first no-keyboard phone.

http://media.engadget.com/img/product/1/17k/blackberry-storm-9530-1ow-800.jpg

It was supposed to be BlackBerry's answer to the iPhone but it was a resistive touch screen that felt archaic compared to iPhone's compacitive touch screen. Also as you might imagine the app selection just wasn't there.

That is one very cool concept video, well done on making that, that must have taken some serious effort. Like dave & TgD, I have to agree though, I just can't see a touchscreen display for where the front facing buttons usually go working out, I need to be able to hit those physical buttons using muscle memory while looking at the tv.

Replied to: How would you change Sony’s Xperia Z? http://mitchmckenna.com/post/14425/replied-to-how-would-you-change-sonys-xperia-z

I think Sony completely blundered the marketing of this phone. I thought the Xperia Z's design was up there with Android's phone of the year 2013 - the HTC One, however it didn't become nearly as popular. They did a great job of getting it hyped at CES January 2013, but then they didn't get the phone on any carriers till 6 months after launch, and it was only T-Mobile (not even one of the bigger carriers). I thought it was great they launched an unlocked phone from the get-go, however, you need carriers to have these phones in their stores, so people can see them and play with them. And to this day you can only find the unlocked versions on Amazon and Best Buy.

Replied to: What apps and devices are you using to get healthy? http://mitchmckenna.com/post/13949/replied-to-what-apps-and-devices-are-you-using-to-get-healthy

For keeping running/biking data synced across services I really like iSmoothRun (http://www.ismoothrun.com) for iOS, it will automatically post your run/bike to an impressive amount of different services (RunKeeper, Strava, Dailymile, Nike+, Garmin, Fitbit, etc). Not sure if there's something similar for Android, I used to use Google MyTracks (http://www.google.com/mobile/mytracks/) and then share the run/bike to each service manually.

Replied to: Biggest tech misfires of 2013 http://mitchmckenna.com/post/13848/replied-to-biggest-tech-misfires-of-2013

DICE's Battlefield 4 launch was plagued with so many issues the first week of release that DICE's parent company EA's stock took a 8.28% drop because of angry users and as a result DICE had to cease development on other games to fix bf4's issues. Although, many of the big issues were fixed in patches released a couple weeks after the launch, and the game is amazingly fun now.

For the first week the main multiplayer game type Conquest did not work for anyone, users experienced annoyingly getting disconnected from games they did manage to connect to, as well as the game crashing all together and kicking them out to their console home screen often.

Replied to: Moving from Android to iOS is not as bad as you think http://mitchmckenna.com/post/13705/replied-to-moving-from-android-to-ios-is-not-as-bad-as-you-think

I agree with all your points here, I was on android up till iPhone 5, I was ready to try something new and by that time the platforms had a lot of the same functionality the other was boasting about. Which I think is a good thing, you can just got with the best phone when your contract expires without really worrying about the OS.

What gets harder for jumping platforms is if you have invested a lot of money in apps, gets tough to justify re-buying all your favorite apps.

Customizing homescreens/icons got old, I came to enjoy the simplicity in iOS of your homescreen is your app drawer; no more moving apps to the homescreen, they're all there, just swipe through. Notifications aren't as good on iOS but they're better than they used to be. @sirdurable makes a good point on iTunes, I do hate opening it up to sync music, hoping the new Google Music app for iOS alleviates this.
